Life in lockdown has been enough to make anyone scream, even Hollywood stars.
Just ask Sharon Stone, who has spent the past few months isolating with her three sons at their sprawling home in Los Angeles.
When it all became too much for her, she discovered a novel way to let off steam.
‘When I got frustrated with what was going on in the world, I'd go outside onto my balcony and scream at the top of my lungs, like I was being murdered,' she says in our video chat.
‘And what was so fantastic was that my neighbours seemed to understand completely - no one thought it strange in the least.

So I'd go outside and scream and scream and scream.
Sharon Stone (pictured) who lives in Los Angeles, revealed how she's been coping during the global coronavirus pandemic
'And then I'd go inside to my bedroom and either punch the pillow or bang my head on it.

Then I'd go back to work.'
Sharon had more time than most to get to grips with what's been going on because she had advance warning of the pandemic. ‘I cancelled all my overseas dates at the end of February,' she says.
‘My lawyer says I was the first person to cancel travel.
I was told I'd be sued but I did it anyway. I think I've always been a bit prescient, but I also listen and research.
'And you have to realise I've been working for 25 years in the infectious disease world, and there are doctors I talk to who I've been working with for most of my life.

So I was able to make a move on this sooner than most people.'
RELATED ARTICLES [# Previous] [# 1] [# Next] [/femail/food/article-8450345/Sir-Paul-McCartney-urges-government-meat-school-dinner-menus.html Sir Paul McCartney and daughters Stella and Mary urge...] [/femail/article-8451031/Theresa-gets-100K-speaking-gig-Malala-Greta-Thunberg-command-highest-prices.html Theresa May has already made a MILLION on the public...]

Share

Sharon has been involved with the fight against Aids since the early 1990s, when she joined with neighbours to help another neighbour, Elizabeth Glaser - the wife of Starsky & Hutch's Paul Michael Glaser - organise street fairs to raise money for research.
Tragically Elizabeth, who'd already lost a child to the disease through a contaminated blood transfusion while giving birth, died of Aids in 1994.
After her death, Sharon's commitment to the cause grew, and for more than 20 years she's been global campaign chairwoman for the American Foundation for Aids Research.
Sharon, who has been working for 25 years in the infectious disease world, raised eyebrows when she had a nurse take guests' temperatures at her 62nd birthday party in March.

Pictured: Sharon having her temperature tested at her birthday party in LA
As such, she's privy to inside health knowledge that others may not have. At her 62nd birthday party in early March, she raised eyebrows in Hollywood by having a nurse take guests' temperatures as they arrived.
She's said that people at the time thought she was ‘a little bit crazy'.

No one is thinking that now.
‘I speak to people who work in health, and this didn't just happen at the beginning of March, it was already happening by then.
'There's a lot we don't know about it - but we do know it's serious.

And opening the country back up again will be another test, because we may have a second wave of infections from that.
I wept for three days at the grief and horror of it all ‘It's not that it's all OK out there.
It's like with Aids - you can be wanting to go back into the world, but if you don't wear a condom, Aids is still there, so get clued-up.
'And for anyone who's been rip-roaring to go back out again during this crisis without wearing a mask, or washing your hands or, in my opinion, wearing glasses - because in my view it's all the same salivary system, and I wouldn't want anybody to sneeze into my eyeball either - have a brain in your head!'
Even though lockdown has been easing in LA before it has in Britain, she has absolutely no intention of emerging long-term from the home she shares with Roan, 20, Laird, 15, and Quinn, 13, until she's sure it's safe to do so.
The 62-year-old (pictured) revealed that she spent three days crying when the pandemic first struck
Ask her what she misses most about normal life, and she shrugs.

‘This is my normal life,' she says.
‘I can't go out of the house without paparazzi following me, so I don't go out much. I've lived like a hermit for 20 years, so it's not been so different.
'For me, what's so abnormal is the crisis that's been going on in the outside world - the horror, the death, everyone acting so crazy.'
She admits that when the pandemic first struck, it hit her hard.
‘There was one time I cried for three days.

Just the grief and [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html kynghidongduong.vn] the acknowledgement of the losses so many people - it was a big punch in the gut. I couldn't even get up - I stayed in bed around the clock and wept. And then it started to leave me and I began to heal.'
Sadly, bereavement has struck her on a personal level too recently, not once but twice.
Northern Irish peace activist Betty Williams, who she says was ‘like a second mother', died on 17 March of pneumonia, then on 18 April fellow Aids worker Eileen Mitzman, who Sharon had ‘adopted' some years before along with Eileen's husband Neil as her honorary grandparents, also died, from coronavirus.
Sharon shared that her sons have adjusted to confinement with impressive ease and their grades have been coming up.

Pictured: Sharon and her son Roan Bronstein
Now, having come to terms with her personal losses and the world's crisis, she says she's actually allowed herself to enjoy her time at home.
‘I'm here on the terrace of my bedroom in beautiful Los Angeles, which has become more beautiful every day because we haven't been driving cars and polluting.
'I've had some laughs until I could just cry, a lot of them because I've been trying to paint, which is pretty funny.
'Because I paint, and then paint over my paintings, and then paint over the painting I painted over, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali] and then realise they're just awful anyway.

My roses are blooming, which I'm very excited about. And my kids are blooming too, which is really interesting.'
She says her boys adjusted to their [http://pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=confinement confinement] with impressive ease.
‘They've been doing really well with home school.
Their grades are coming up, and they're getting on really well with each other.
'They're funny and make me laugh a lot. We've had rough days, of course, but you do when you're not quarantining. This has been a great family experience.'
Sharon, who has had more than 100 acting credits in her 40-year career, revealed that her dream when she came to LA was to work for Martin Scorsese.

Pictured: Sharon in hit thriller Basic Instinct
Not every young man has a mother who became famous, as Sharon did, for a show-it-all leg-crossing scene in the thriller Basic Instinct. But Sharon says that, for her boys, it's just another part of their family story.
‘They've all seen everything I've done.

They have a very stable sense of reality. They think I'm a badass, and they think I'm a good actress too.'
She makes no secret of the fact she wishes the rest of the world shared her sons' appreciation of her acting talents.
Although she's had more than 100 acting credits in her 40-year career - and won both an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award in 1996 for her performance as a drug-addicted ex-prostitute in Martin Scorsese's Casino - she says she's continually frustrated that people persist in seeing her as Basic Instinct's sex bomb Catherine Tramell.
What do I have to do to be taken seriously? ‘My real dream when I came to LA from Pennsylvania was to work for Martin Scorsese and with Robert De Niro.

I didn't come from privilege when I came here.
'My Dad made $14,000 [around £7,000] a year, my mother planted a garden and preserved her own produce, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali] so we had fruit and vegetables through the winter. My father hunted for meat, and I grew up knowing that work was how you got somewhere in life.
‘I took some jobs that weren't great because I needed the money, but what I really wanted to do was work with Scorsese.
And I did.
Sharon, who is set to release her memoir later this year, says she's continually frustrated that people persist in seeing her as Basic Instinct's sex bomb Catherine Tramell.

Pictured: The 62-year-old in Casino
'I find it odd and feel a bit disappointed that none of the other directors near his stratosphere have offered me work since. I don't quite comprehend what happened there.
'I worked and achieved my dream, so what else do I have to do to be taken seriously?
Even after I'd done Casino, people offered me really stupid jobs and I'd think, "Even now, you want to not respect me just because Basic Instinct was sexual? What do I have to do to be seen?"'
She's set to release her memoir, The Beauty Of Living Twice, later this year and she has many stories to tell that mark her out as somewhat unlucky.
There was the stroke in 2001 that left her with a bleed on the brain for nine days, and a few weeks ago she revealed on a podcast how she'd been struck by lightning.
‘I was at home and we had our own well,' she explained.

‘I was filling the iron with water, and I had one hand on the tap, one hand on the iron and the well got hit with lightning and the lightning came up through the water.'
The power of the surge threw her across the kitchen and into the fridge.
Fortunately her mother was there at the time.
Sharon (pictured) explained that she's having more luck with television than movies, as she stars in new series Ratched
‘She was standing there and she just belted me across the face and brought me to.

I was in such an altered state. I don't know how to describe it - so bright, like "Wow!"'
Her mother took her to hospital where an electrocardiogram showed her body was pulsing with electricity, and she had to be monitored for the next ten days.
Yet like many leading actresses these days, Sharon says she's having more luck with television than the movies.
Her new series Ratched, created by Ryan Murphy - who was also behind Glee and the recent series Hollywood - will be on Netflix in September.
It's a prequel to the acclaimed 1975 movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest with Jack Nicholson, detailing the early life of the cruel mental institution Nurse Mildred Ratched.
Although Sharon is forbidden to give too much away about the plot, she admits she's excited to be in it.
‘All I can say is that it's Nurse Ratched's life in the 1940s and everybody's nuts in it!' she laughs.

‘We have Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon - who's amazing - and Judy Davis is unbelievably good. And it's Ryan Murphy, which made it a blast! We had really good fun.'
Sharon, who divorced from Phil Bronstein (pictured) in 2004, revealed that she's doing dating sites but she doesn't believe chemistry can be felt over a text or FaceTime
Divorced from journalist husband Phil Bronstein since 2004, Sharon's currently single, and having tried using dating sites (she was blocked from one, Bumble, last year because they didn't believe it was actually her) reports now that, where possible, she prefers to find romance the old-fashioned way.
‘I've had a couple of dates but it could be a comedy show,' she laughs.

‘I'm still doing the dating sites but chemistry is something you have to feel, it's not something I'm getting over a text or FaceTime.
'You need pheromones. My parents were married for 60 years and they definitely had pheromones.

So we'll see.'
One good thing to come out of the crisis, she says, is that a lot of men have discovered their domestic sides.
‘Since they started cooking for themselves and taking care of themselves, they've started to talk like human beings.

They've been a bit like tigers in a cage, wanting out, but they've also been thinking, "When I do get out, do I have any value, and what might that be?" They've changed, they're not being so crazy. Except for the really crazy ones of course!'
Ratched hits Netflix in September.
<div class="art-ins mol-factbox femail" data-version="2" id="mol-db018e80-b568-11ea-a7b0-875ad92f6908" website Stone coped with strain of lockdown by screaming on her balcony

It's also worth noting that many, if not most, PS4 wired headsets also work just fine with the [ Xbox One], Windows PCs, Macs and the [ Nintendo Switch].

For more TV & Audio
Subscribe to the TV & Audio newsletter, receive notifications and see related stories on CNET.

If you want to eliminate the cord that goes from the controller to your headphones, however, there are plenty of wireless headset options. Just be aware that they all include -- and require -- a low-latency wireless dongle that plugs into the USB port on your PS4 (there should be no audio delay). Note, too, that almost no PS4 wireless gaming headsets will also work with the Xbox One. The Switch, meanwhile, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali] requires a USB-C wireless dongle for wireless headset connectivity (though some of the USB dongles do work via the Switch's dock).

Some midrange and higher-model models -- both wired and wireless -- feature 7.1 virtual surround sound. To be clear, this isn't real surround sound, but it can help create a richer, more immersive audio experience. It also gives you a better sense of spatial awareness with certain games where that can be an advantage.

With those basics established, let's talk about our favorite PS4 options. An included USB dongle allows you to connect wirelessly to your PS4 and the microphone can be muted by flipping the boom up. The GSP 370 is also compatible with PCs.

Our friends at our sister site GameSpot noted that it's a [ relatively low-frills model] for its midrange price, with few physical buttons (no chat volume control, no sound mode toggles) except for a power switch and a large volume wheel that operates very smoothly. That would be the $300 [ Quantum One], but that's a wired headset and also overkill for the PS4. The Quantum 800 is wireless and includes a dongle that works with your PS4 and Windows PC. It also features noise canceling and sounds excellent not just for games, but music and movies too. It's slightly heavy, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali] but is comfortable to wear.

Its microphone performance is middle of the pack and probably not quite as good as it should be at this price. It's also worth noting that the microphone isn't detachable (it is on the Quantum One) but does flip up to mute. It'd be nice if it was detachable because its Bluetooth connectivity could be used on the go with your smartphone. Battery life is rated at up to 14 hours with the lights turned off, but expect to get a little less than that if you keep the volume fairly high.

On the PC side, JBL needs to work out some kinks with the software but everything is more straightforward with the PS4. This is the headset to consider if you want a model that's versatile, has good sound quality and works with multiple devices.

[/products/jbl-quantum-800/ Read more].

[ $200 at Amazon]

[ $200 at Best Buy]

[ $200 at Abt Electronics]

[ Good value wireless under $100]

[ SteelSeries Arctis 1]

[ ]

SteelSeries

As we mentioned above, the [ Arctis Pro Wireless] is a monster -- but it costs more than $300. If you want a much more affordable alternative, check out the Arctis 1, a well-designed (but less swanky) wireless model that sells for about $100. It's a great value and is compatible (in wireless mode) with PS4 and PC, as well as the Nintendo Switch, thanks to an included USB-C dongle. The Discord-certified microphone is detachable and battery life is rated at up to 20 hours, which is pretty decent.

[/products/steelseries-arctis-1-wireless/ Read more].

[ $100 at Abt Electronics]

[ $85 at Adorama]

[ Solid under-$40 wired option]

[ JBL Quantum 100]

[ ]

David Carnoy/CNET

The Quantum 100 is the entry-level model in JBL's new line of Quantum gaming headsets, which run from $40 to $300. There's nothing fancy about this model, but it's pretty lightweight and comfortable with nicely padded ear cups, plus it has a detachable boom microphone. On the left ear cup there's a volume control dial along with a microphone mute button. It also works with other game consoles and is pretty decent for music, though it's a touch bright.

While some of JBL's higher-end models feature wireless connectivity and even noise canceling, the Quantum 100 is just a basic gaming headphone that will appeal to more casual gamers on a tight budget.

[/products/jbl-quantum-100/ Read more].

[ $40 at Amazon]

[ $40 at Best Buy]

[ $40 at Abt Electronics]

[#comments Comments]

[/topics/gaming-accessories/ Gaming Accessories]

[/topics/mobile-accessories/ Mobile Accessories]

[/topics/headphones/ Headphones]

[/tags/sony/ Sony]

[ Notification on Notification off Tv & audio]

It's betting that the likely advantages of Arm chips -- lower power consumption, lower costs and greater control over product plans -- will outweigh the disruptions.

"The first thing this will do is give the Mac a whole new level of performance," said Johny Srouji, senior vice president of hardware technologies. Apple Mac chips also employ mobile device hardware for better power management, graphics, artificial intelligence and secure enclave hardware security hardware.

Apple demonstrated several important apps already adapted for the new chips, taking pains to show the horsepower of its Arm-based Macs. It demonstrated Final Cut Pro playing three simultaneous 4K video streams, Lightroom scrolling and synchronizing edits across a large catalog, and Photoshop being used to edit a large image with complicated edits. Other demos featured Affinity Photo and Cinema 4D.

With a new version of its Rosetta emulation tool, software written for Intel-based Macs will run on the new Arm-based machines. There, Apple demonstrated the Tomb Raider game running at 1080p screen resolution. Apple will support Intel-based Macs for years, the company said.

It's still not clear exactly how fast Arm-based Macs will be, which products will arrive first, how much they'll cost, and how good their battery life will be, though. "I am very disappointed Apple didn't provide a lot of technical details to give confidence to users and developers in the Arm-based processor Mac experience," said Moor Insights and Strategy [ analyst Patrick Moorhead].

Later at WWDC, Apple said it'll have a variety of Arm chips for [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali giá rẻ] different size Macs, spanning from more efficient models for compact Macs to beefier, hotter chips that consume more electricity in bigger Macs.

The transition to Arm-based Macs will take up to two years, which could cast a shadow on some products.

"We do wonder whether this could prompt consumers to delay their purchases of existing Intel-based Macs in the next 24 months, on the fear that they'd be buying an orphaned product," Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi said in a research note Tuesday.

See also

[/news/wwdc-2020-heres-everything-apple-announced-ios-14-macos-big-sur-mac-arm-chips-siri-messages-memoji/ Apple launches Arm-based Mac, iOS 14, MacOS Big Sur and more]
[/news/ios-14-unveiled-at-wwdc-2020-first-glimpse-upcoming-apple-iphone-software-features/ iOS 14 unveiled: A first glimpse at Apple's upcoming iPhone software]
[ ]

Apple's first Mac Arm chip: A12Z
The chips, which Apple broadly called Apple Silicon, is designed by Apple but will be brawnier than the A-series chips in iPads and iPhones. Apple's special developer Macs will use the A12Z processor in newer iPad Pro, but Apple said aspects of that Mac Mini-like machine won't match the Macs that consumers will buy.

One new trick the chip and Rosetta will enable is the ability to [/news/apples-new-arm-based-macs-will-run-iphone-ipad-apps/ run iPhone and iPad software directly on the new Macs].

The switch to Intel chips, [/news/apple-to-reveal-plans-for-using-its-own-chips-in-macs-at-wwdc-report-says/ rumored for nearly a decade], emerged at the online version of WWDC. The conference ordinarily draws thousands of programmers learning about the latest changes to writing programs for Macs, iPhones and iPads, but went virtual this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Many of those programmers interested in WWDC now will need to wrestle with the challenge of re-creating their software for Arm Macs.

Computer processors are some of the most complicated products on the planet, with billions of electronic components carefully arranged to balance performance and power consumption. Apple's A series processors, used in all its mobile devices and members of the Arm chip family, have consistently outpaced rival Arm designs used in Android phones.

Macs are influential PCs that command premium prices, but they [ still represent less than 10%] of computers being used today. Using its own Arm chips offers Apple a chance to cut costs dramatically -- [ saving $100 to $150 in Mac component costs], in Moorhead's estimate.

Apple at WWDC 2020

[/news/wwdc-2020-heres-everything-apple-announced-ios-14-macos-big-sur-mac-arm-chips-siri-messages-memoji/ WWDC 2020 live coverage]

[/news/if-apples-splitting-with-intels-processors-for-macbooks-we-have-questions/ Is Apple jettisoning Intel's processors for MacBooks? Each time, it eased the transition with emulation software to enable programs built for the earlier chip design run on the new Macs, though at a significant cost in performance.

One aspect of the transition will be easier on Mac customers this time around: much of the software we use runs in a web browser. Web developers building sites like Google.com or web apps like Facebook.com don't generally need to know or care what processor a computer is running.

So if you use Google's Gmail for email and Microsoft's Outlook 365's online word processor, Arm-based Macs will be less of a disruption.
Re-creating Mac software
Programmers will have varying degrees of difficulty rebuilding their software for Arm-based Macs while continuing to support Intel-based Macs that will still be used for years.

Developers firmly in the Apple camp, using its Xcode programming tools and its Swift programming language, will have the easiest time with Arm Macs. And programmers tweaking their iPad apps into MacOS versions using Apple's Catalyst approach also should have an easy time.

Apple's Arm chips will inherit abilities built into Apple's A-series chips for iPhones and iPads.

Screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET

"The vast majority of developers can get their apps up and running in just days," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering.

But many programs, particularly those like Adobe Photoshop that are developed to run on Windows, too, often use other tools and languages. Web browsers, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html kynghidongduong.vn] for example, are usually written in the C++ language. There, more work will be required. So while Apple's Safari browser will be available from day one on Arm-based Macs, other versions could take longer to arrive.

Some developers are excited. "This will mean greater innovation and better performance, not just from a speed perspective but also battery life," said Jayson Lane, developer of the [ Quick Draft note-taking app]. He acknowledges that developers of heavy-duty software for jobs like sound, photo and video editing will have a harder time moving to Arm. But for simpler apps like his, "the Arm transition will be surprisingly easy ... perhaps even as easy as clicking a checkbox."

Software sometimes is carefully optimized to run as fast as possible on a particular chip design, but programmers have had time to adapt software development tools like Clang, supported by both Apple and Google, to Arm designs, said 451 Research analyst [ James Sanders].

"Improvements to Arm support in the Clang compiler over the past two years should mitigate optimization challenges," he said.

Low-level software called drivers that let a computing device communicate with components like network chips and accessories like printers also will need to be [http://www.britannica.com/search?query=rewritten rewritten] for the new Macs. That could mean support gaps for third-party hardware, and older products may never work with the new Macs.
Arm chips getting faster
Some are worried that Mac Arm chips won't be fast enough to make emulation useful. One worrisome example is a line of Windows laptops that use Qualcomm's Arm chips. "It works super well in terms of functionality, but the performance for apps that you need/want like Chrome, Photoshop, or Acrobat Reader make it a non-usable solution,"[ Steven Sinofsky], Microsoft's former Windows leader and now a partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, said in a [ blog post ahead of the transition].

Apple will offer developers a transition kit to get started bringing their software to Arm-based Macs.

Screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET

Apple touting its new Rosetta emulation software indicates confidence its Arm Macs have enough performance to handle emulation fine, though. "It's awesome what Rosetta can do with existing games," said Andreas Wendker, Apple's vice president for tools and frameworks engineering.

Intel has struggled in recent years to improve its chips' performance while Apple has steadily advanced its A series of chips -- a hundredfold improvement since it began the line, Apple said Monday. The chips' core performance attribute, the speed of a single thread of computing instructions, has increased each year. And Apple has added new circuitry to speed up graphics and artificial intelligence software, too.

A UK company called [ ] but also licenses its' chip instruction set -- the collection of commands software can use to control it -- to companies like Apple that design their own. That leaves room for companies to build more powerful processors than are used in most phones if they're willing to pay for physically larger chips and accept designs that consume more power.

One such example is [ ]. Another is [ Amazon's Graviton processors], a low-cost alternative to Intel chips for servers in its enormous Amazon Web Services business. Those chips are based on [ Arm's Neoverse designs] for data centers packed with servers.

"Apple is not alone in their exploration of Arm for higher-performance scenarios," Sanders said.

WWDC 2020

[/wwdc/ See All]

•
reading
[ Apple gives Macs a brain transplant with new Arm chips starting this year]

•
Jun 28
[/how-to/watchos-7-why-the-new-apple-watch-changes-matter-and-how-youll-use-them/ WatchOS 7: Why the new Apple Watch changes matter and how you'll use them]

•
Jun 28
[/news/ios-14-preview-hands-on-widgets-app-clips-back-tap-and-picture-in-picture/ iOS 14 preview: Hands-on with widgets, App Clips, Back Tap and picture-in-picture]

•
Jun 28
[/how-to/ios-14-compatibility-find-out-if-new-operating-system-will-work-on-your-iphone/ iOS 14 compatibility: Find out if the new operating system will work on your iPhone]

•
Jun 28
[/how-to/apple-watch-watchos-7-features-announced-wwdc-2020-cant-wait-try/ 10 new WatchOS 7 features I can't wait to try on my Apple Watch]

[#comments Comments]

[/wwdc/ WWDC 2020]

[/apple-event/ Apple Event]

[/topics/computers/ Computers]

[/tags/processors/ Processors]

[/tags/arm/ Arm]

[/tags/intel/ Intel]

[/apple/ Notification on Notification off Apple]

The first [http://www.squidoo.com/search/results?q=generation%20Audi generation Audi] A4 was based on the Volkswagen Group's B5 platform same as the fourth generation VW Passat. Its engine was mounted at the front and was front-wheel-driven. For the first year, the Audi A4 was a saloon only, the estate model was launched in the following year. In Europe, it was available in many variants of engines; 1.6litre and 2.8 litre in petrols and a 1.9litre diesel engine with VW's VE technology. However in North America, until 1997, the only engine offered in Audi A4 was a 2.8 litre V6 engine.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Volkswagen Group's landmark 1.8 litre 20v engine was first introduced in Audi A4 and had five valves per cylinder, the turbocharged engine was capable of producing 148 bhp and 155 lb-ft of torque. In 1996, the whole family of V6 engines were mated with the same technology, starting with the 2.8 litre V6 that could now produce 190bhp. Audi's triptronic automatic gearbox also made its debut on the B5 platform. It offers the driver not only the conventional gearbox but also it has a torque converter that allows the driver to choose between fully automatic or manual operation.

The A4 received a facelift in 1997 and was known internally as B5. It made its first appearance in the Frankfurt Motor Show and the production followed in 1998. The 2.8 litre 12 valve was replaced by the 2.8 litre 30-valve V6 engine. The Quattro variant was powered by the 2.5 litre V6 TDI diesel engine. All of the engines were mated with a six speed manual gearbox as standard. However, the history of the brand begins in 1971, when the first textile company by Akarlilar was created in Istanbul. It was called "Textile Guvena". In 1984 "ERAK" company was established, which focused on manufacture of jeans and denim for the world brands. And 1991 brings Mavi customized jeans to the world markets together with a Perfect Fit strategy, according to which the customers were offered special style solutions and size systems, adapted to each concrete country. That year the company takes 128th place in the list of 500 best manufacturing companies in Turkey. 2001 brings the first fashion show in New York and opening of a new showroom in Dallas. The company rapidly spreads to the markets of Australia and Denmark and lands on the 77th place in the above mentioned list. At the CPD-X SITE fair in Germany in 2002 Mavi Jeans brand is in the focus of attention and President of Mavi North America Ersin Akarlilar occupies the 93rd place in the list of most influential people in the USA.

In Turkey the triumph of the brand is even more evident.

Jordanian villages can be seen in the background just kilometres from the Palestinian village of Ayn al-Bayda lying in the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank

Israeli plans to annex swathes of the West Bank would violate its peace treaty with Jordan, heaping pressure on Amman to review its ties with the Jewish state, analysts say.

But ultimately cash-strapped Jordan, which depends on over a billion dollars in annual aid from the United States, will be unable to stop the move which has been greenlighted by Washington, they say.

Jordan is, along with Egypt, the only Arab nation to have signed a peace treaty with Israel.

But opinion polls have repeatedly shown that the 1994 treaty -- signed one year after Oslo peace accords between Israel and the Palestinians -- is overwhelmingly opposed by Jordanians.

King Abdullah II, who has often complained of a "cold peace" with Israel, has already warned that annexation would lead to a "massive conflict".

"I don't want to make threats and create a loggerheads atmosphere, but we are considering all options," the king told German magazine Der Spiegel in May.

Ordinary Jordanians meanwhile told AFP it poses an "existential threat" for a country where more than half of the 10 million population are of Palestinian origin.

Jordan would be "forced to review all aspects of our relations with Israel", Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz has said.

- 'Decisive message' -

Analysts say there are many options on the table.

Jordan could cancel the peace treaty or scrap some of its key clauses -- namely those concerning security and intelligence cooperation -- shutter Israel's [http://www.ehow.com/search.html?s=embassy embassy] in Amman or recall its ambassador from Tel Aviv.
Jordan's King Abdullah II has warned that annexing the West Bank, which was under Jordanian administration until it was occupied by Israel in the 1967 war, could lead to a 'massive conflict'

"Jordan must send a decisive message to Israel and the Americans that says if you take that path (annexation) we will cancel the peace treaty," said Oraib Rintawi of the Al-Quds Centre for Political Studies.

Former Jordanian information minister Mohammed al-Momani said Israel's planned annexation of Jewish settlements and other territory in the West Bank, including the Jordan Valley that runs along Jordan's border, would be a clear "violation" of the peace treaty.

The treaty stipulates that "no side will take unilateral action that will undermine the interests of the other side".

But annexation "undermines Jordanian interests, which lie in the creation of a Palestinian state," he said.

"This is a direct threat to Jordan's national security," added Momani, saying Amman could urge UN Security Council intervention or complain to the International Court of Justice.

- 'Existential threat' -

Analysts say Jordan signed the peace treaty specifically because it believed it would pave the way for the creation of a Palestinian state and solve a problem that has bedevilled the kingdom for decades.

Sandwiched between Israel and Jordan, the West Bank -- including east Jerusalem -- had been under Jordanian administration until Israel occupied it in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Following the conflict, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled to Jordan to join an influx of others who sought refuge there after the creation of Israel in 1948.
Palestinian farmlands in the village of Furush Beit Dajan in the Jordan Valley, more than half of Jordan's 10 million people are of Palestinian origin

Jordanians of Palestinian origin account for more than half of Jordan's 10 million people and 2.2 million Palestinians are registered with the United Nations as refugees.

Palestinians say annexation would make it impossible to form a coherent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

King Abdullah shares that view and has repeatedly said there can be no alternative to a Palestinian state and no permanent settlement of Palestinian refugees in Arab host countries.

On the streets of Amman, Jordanians questioned by AFP echoed the king's views and expressed their own fears.

"The annexation plan is an existential danger for Jordan and Palestine," said shopkeeper Abdullah Musa, 44, who sells electrical appliances.

"There will be nothing left to establish a Palestinian state," he said.

Photographer Luay Malhass said "tens of thousands of Palestinians will be forced to flee the West Bank".

"Annexation... will create a dilemma for Jordan by forcing on it the option of an alternative state for the Palestinians and their permanent settlement," Malhass said.

Cancelling the peace treaty with Israel would be the king's "most important decision of his reign", Musa added.

- 'Rhetoric' -

But some analysts believe Jordan's ability to stand [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali giá rẻ] up against the US-backed Israeli plans is limited.

"Jordan's options will be diminished because it is bound by strategic relations with Washington... and is very much dependent on US aid," said Ahmad Awad, head of the Phoenix Centre for [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html kynghidongduong.vn] Economics and Informatics Studies.

"Jordan can suspend the treaty if it wishes... (but) Jordan is not going to do anything tangible to stop annexation," he said.

It could also "formally suspend security cooperation... but security cooperation would continue, informally, because Jordan cannot survive otherwise," he added.

Even suspending the gas agreement between the two countries would hurt Jordan more than Israel.

"There will be lots of rhetoric about opposition to it, but there is nothing Jordan can do," he said.

By Nellie Peyton and Christine Murray

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY, June 24 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - W hen California State Assemblywoman Shirley Weber introduced a bill last year to study reparations for African Americans, she was worried people wouldn't accept that racial inequality and injustice were still alive and well.

Instead, the bill came up for a vote two weeks after the death of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, at the hands of a white police officer spurred a nationwide reckoning on that very topic.

It passed the assembly on June 11 with a 56-5 vote.

"Maybe we'll be a model for what can happen at the federal level," Weber told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The bill goes next to the California State Senate, where she expects it to pass and then be signed into law by the governor.

The idea of reparation is nothing new and has been used around the world to compensate victims of war, rape, terror and a host of other historical injustices.

Yet the United States has never made much headway in its discussions of whether or how to compensate African Americans for more than 200 years of slavery inflicted on their ancestors by white people.

In the subsequent decades, racial inequality in wealth, housing, healthcare and education has persisted.

Some Democrats want a commission to look into reparations, but the bill that would do this - H.R. 40 - has been on the table for decades and never garnered broad support.

Now that Floyd's death has shed light on racial inequality, advocates say support for reparations is up.

Like Weber, many do not plan to wait on the federal government to make a move.

"There are a lot of things happening locally," said Justin Hansford, a law professor and director of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center at Howard University.

"Reparations are going to happen locally first, and then later on, there's likely to be a national response as well."

In partnership with Columbia University, Howard University last week launched a project to identify and support local efforts to provide redress to African Americans - both for slavery and for racially motivated crimes.

Called the U.S.

African American Redress Network, it details more than 100 efforts to make good, ranging from public apologies to compensation in the form of scholarships or cash.

LOCAL ACTION

There are several cases of reparations being paid to African Americans which advocates say could serve as a blueprint.

In the earliest example, the state of Florida in 1994 awarded payment and free college tuition to descendents of the victims of a massacre 71 years earlier, when a white mob burned their town to the ground.

Georgetown University and Virginia Theological Seminary are among schools pledging to offer funds for descendants of the slaves that built them or were sold to finance them.

And last year the city of Evanston, in Illinois, created a reparations fund to bridge the racial wealth gap among its residents, funded by taxes on marijuana.

There are many different ways to pay reparations, but what matters is the intent, said Weber, the assemblywoman.

"That's normally what people do who believe that others have been wronged. You try to figure out how you can level the playing field," she said.

Even private industries donating to racial justice funds can be seen as a form of reparations, said Hansford.

"To me that is acknowledgement that there needs to be an investment in order to get healing," he said.

Big companies from Bank of America to PepsiCo have pledged millions on addressing racial inequality since Floyd's death.

In Britain, insurer Lloyd's of London and the pub chain Greene King have apologized for their role in the slave trade and also said they will invest in Black communities and talent.

POLITICAL ROADBLOCK

The issue gained national attention last year when several Democratic primary candidates endorsed reparations.

Presidential nominee Joe Biden has said he supports a study.

The national bill has more backing than ever, but not among Republicans, whose vote it would need to pass the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says reparations are a bad idea because "none of us currently living are responsible" for slavery.

Lawmakers in at least five states have introduced their own legislation to explore the issue.

"Some of the political actors do believe that they have a better chance of passing these bills in the midst of the current wave of protests," said William Darity, a professor at Duke University who co-authored a book on reparations.

Small-scale initiatives are admirable, but anything less than a national effort will be insufficient to close the racial wealth gap, said Darity.

The average Black household has a net wealth $800,000 lower than the average white household, he estimates.

"The states and the localities, they just don't have the capacity to meet that task," said Darity, who suggests giving each of the roughly 40 million Black Americans descended from slaves up to $250,000 in a trust.

"It's the federal government that should be the culpable party because created the legal and the authority framework that permitted all of these atrocities to take place," he added.

Globally, there are precedents.

Germany paid millions to Holocaust survivors and South Africa compensated apartheid victims.

Family members of disappeared Colombians, rape survivors, and [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html kynghidongduong.vn] those displaced in the country's armed conflict have been compensated since 2011.

In response to protests over racial inequality, the top United Nations official for human rights called on countries to make amends for racist violence through reparations.

"There's no amount of money that can be paid, really, to fully repair," said Arif Ali, a lawyer who was part of a U.N.

team on compensation for victims of Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Ali said that under international law, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali từ hà nội] the United States was obliged to pay - it is now just a matter of working out how.

"The experience of other countries is a reference point," he said.
"Where there's a will, there's a way." (Reporting by Nellie Peyton and Christine Murray; editing by Lyndsay Griffiths.

A Review Of Audi A4 B5 Engine Range (1994-2001)

The first Audi A4 was launched in November 1994 and had an alias of Type 8D. The first generation Audi A4 was based on the Volkswagen Group's B5 platform same as the fourth generation VW Passat. Its engine was mounted at the front and was front-wheel-driven. For the first year, the Audi A4 was a saloon only, [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali giá rẻ] the estate model was launched in the following year. In Europe, it was available in many variants of engines; 1.6litre and 2.8 litre in petrols and a 1.9litre diesel engine with VW's VE technology. However in North America, until 1997, the only engine offered in Audi A4 was a 2.8 litre V6 engine.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Volkswagen Group's landmark 1.8 litre 20v engine was first introduced in Audi A4 and [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html tour bali từ hà nội] had five valves per cylinder, the turbocharged engine was capable of producing 148 bhp and 155 lb-ft of torque.

It made its first [http://www.sharkbayte.com/keyword/appearance appearance] in the Frankfurt Motor [https://www.kynghidongduong.vn/tours/tour-bali-tour-du-lich-bali-indonesia-4-ngay-3-dem-tu-ha-noi-tu-sai-gon-hcm-may-bay.html kynghidongduong.vn] Show and the production followed in 1998. The 2.8 litre 12 valve was replaced by the 2.8 litre 30-valve V6 engine. The Quattro variant was powered by the 2.5 litre V6 TDI diesel engine. All of the engines were mated with a six speed manual gearbox as standard. The high performer Audi S4 was also added to the Audi A4 in 1998. Outside, many cosmetic changes were made to the body including new headlights and rear lights, door handles and other tweaks in the interior. The KKK K03 turbocharger was also revised, although it remained fundamentally the same, the turbine sides were updated to avoid cracking caused by the heat.

In 1999, once again the A4 and S4 platforms received further body tweaks like front and rear bumpers, the back and front lights and many changes inside the cabin like centre console etc. The main event was the launch of the an ultra high performance RenSport model, that replaced the RS2 and was named RS4 Avant. The RS4 was only available in the Avant body-sty, same as RS2. The Audi B5 A4 only managed to achieve three stars out five in the Euro NCAP crash test rating. In 1997, Audi became the first manufacturer to a hybrid car into series production with the launch of 3rd generation Audi duo. It was based on the Audi A4 Avant.

Anthony Warner is an expert in Engine For Audi A4 .
