How to Make Polymer Clay Hair Barrettes
For this project, you will need a strong durable polymer clay, like Premo, Fimo or Cernit (put simply, don't utilize regular Sculpey).  You can give your barrettes a number of finishes and effects, so some of the things I want to decorate my barrettes with are pigment powders, imitation gold leaf, embedded beads, or simply utilize clay as they are.  Needless to say, canes will also be perfect for making wonderfully fanciful barrettes and if you're a polymer clay cane type of gal, do it!
You'll want to utilize a pasta machine or clay roller to get a nice flat sheet where you can remove your barrette. You'll also require a standard clip-on barrette backing plus some good polymer clay glue (I use E6000).
How To Make It:
1. Using a thick sheet of clay, cut out a rectangle sufficient to pay the barrette backing
2. Press barrette backing directly into your clay rectangle, curving clay to check the bend with the barrette.
3. Bake barrette and clay together.  (though they won't stay attached at this point, you will get the appropriate curved shape from the barrette permanently baked on the clay)
4. You have two choices here. You can sandwich the barrette edges in a wad of clay, pressed to the back with the baked barrette and rebake it or...
5. Use E6000 glue and just glue that sucker all the way down. Both ways work.
6. Finish off by buffing on the buffing wheel or apply Future Floor Wax for a nice sheen.
